I’ve Been Monsterized!

After listening to the Morning Rush over at Monster Radio RX 93.1 for the longest time, I finally get to meet my morning addiction… Chico and Delle! My sister and I love listening to these two because they are just so hilarious, smart and they just make morning traffic more bearable. Their laughter is so contagious, you’ll get mistaken for a loony because you’re laughing all by your lonesome self… well that is, if you’re like me who usually commutes and listens to the radio using your cellphone.

Anyway, it’s their car stick-on at Caltex, Pasong Tamo early this afternoon and my good friend and I decided to have our late lunch so we can see them, and hopefully have some pictures taken as well.

the wonderful RX jocks

I saw them more than five times already but somehow can’t muster enough courage to come up and have some pics taken… but today, I did! And they are just soooooooo nice and looks so much younger than their ages! I swear! Delle, who’s often mistaken for mataray, is just so friendly… and Chico, well, he’s really nice! I’m gushing like crazy but I don’t care…. I’m just too happy to finally meet them and take note… CHAT with them too! Wooohhhooo!

Rico Robles was a revelation! He looks so much better in person than on tv and he’s nice too! He even checked out my phone to see how clear the picture is…

These guys just made my Monday so much better… it gave me something to be happy about inspite of all the holiday stress in the office and the other stressful moments outside of it.

Commuter’s Etiquette

Categories: Random Blurbs.

Commuting everyday to work allows me to experience things that people bringing their own cars do not have the privilege… I get to experience the kindness of strangers when they let you have their seat in a crowded train or the simple act of giving your fare to the driver when you’re too far to reach and give the fare yourself.

And then there are some who can irritate you because of their sheer lack of etiquette, whether in queues or inside the public transpo. So here’s some that I learned, observed and wanted to share.

1. Queue and don’t overtake.

Translation:  wag makipagunahan at sumingit! Kaya nga may pila eh.

In queues, there’s neither rich nor poor.  We’re equals regardless of how high your salary is or how crisp your polo is. Wag maginarte. Wag makipagunahan sa front seat kung hindi naman ikaw ang nasa unahan ng pila.  There are sooooooooo many people who think that they can get away with this. Uunahan ka sa pila dahil gusto nila sa front seat.  It happened to me a number of times and I don’t let them get away with it; not because I’m being a b*tch but to let them know that this is precisely the essence of queuing.  Keep in mind that the people ahead of you have the option on where they want to sit.  If you’re the last, then that leaves you with no choice but the last available seat. That’s just the way it is.

2. Occupy only the space that’s available to you.

Translation:  wag ipagsiksikan ang sarili sa kakarampot na espasyo… lalo kung di ka naman kapayatan.

This usually happens when the last passenger boards the vehicle.  Imagine this scenario.  Just one more passenger and then you’ll leave the terminal already. So there you are, sitting quite comfortably. Then here comes the last passenger, he/she will sit with the butt almost up your face in the hopes of letting the balakang get as much space as it can tapos gigitgitin ka para umurong ka, when there’s no more space to move.

You have the option anyway to wait for the next ride but since you opted to take this ride and you’re the last passenger, just take the available space and bear with it. Wag mong ipagsiksikan ang sarili mo lalo na kung alam mong di ka na kasya. Don’t belittle yourself. What I mean is, wag mong isipin na isa ka lang tinga na pwedeng sumingit sa ngipin. Tao ka… tao!

3. Adjust your ringtone so that it doesn’t holler inside the vehicle.

Translation:  wag papansin. Nahihinaan ang ringtone. Wag pasikat na polyphonic ang phone mo…. Marami na’ng may ganyan.

There are those who let the whole darn song end before they answer the text or call (pretending they didn’t hear it) just so you’ll know what their ringtone is. Aysus! Juvenile and jologs at best!

Then there are those who holler themselves while talking on their phones. Naman! Di tayo close para malaman ko pa ang juicy details ng buhay mo. Wag mong isipin isa kang megaphone… once more… tao ka… tao (kang nakakairita)… hehehe…

4. If you’re listening to your music player, adjust the volume so that the person beside you is not listening to the vehicle’s radio and to the music screaming out of your earphones simultaneously.

Translation: durugin mo man ang eardrums mo, wala akong pakialam pero wag mong pasakitin ang ulo ko dahil hindi nakakatuwang makinig sa dalawang magkaibang tugtog ng sabay!

These are the new breed of co-passengers that’s getting my goat lately. Parang ano ba??? Kelangan ba talagang ganon kalakas ang tugtog ng iPod mo? So loud that it’s actually blasting out of your earphones???!!  Not good for your ear… and not good for my heart! Nakaka-stress kayo!   And when my patience finally runs out… hindi magiging maganda sa kalusugan mo ang mangyayari.  hehehe

5. Sit properly. Don’t cross your arms nor sit with your elbows poking your seatmate’s side. Instead, sit with your arms extended on your lap.

Translation: umupo ka ng maayos nang hindi kabwisitan ng katabi mo.

I’m not sure if you notice it but crossing your arms, squares your shoulders thus making you occupy more space than you normally do. Sumisikip lalo.

And these people who sit with their elbows folded at their sides will really irritate you because every time the driver hits the brakes, their elbow will surely poke your side and it’s really uncomfortable (painful especially on sudden brakes). Gusto ko magka dimples… pero hindi sa tagiliran ko, ok?

6. Guys, don’t spread your legs far and wide (it’s smaller than you think it is). You and junior can be comfortable without taking other’s space.

Translation:  Kelangan ba talagang naka-180° ang hita mo?

Spreading your legs unnecessarily occupies the space of another passenger, who paid the fare just like you did and yet you sit as though you own the vehicle.  Unless of course you paid twice the fare, then occupy twice the space as you like.

7. Girls, if you’re wearing a skirt (knee-length or shorter), don’t put your bag across your lap; place it horizontally instead. Just so you won’t give the person sitting right across a splitting headache or stiff neck.

Translation:  wag mong bigyan ng kasalanan yung lalake sa harap mo… wag mo din bigyan ng stiff neck yung babaeng kaharap mo (kakaiwas ng tingin kasi medyo….. ewwwwwwwww).

Most office girls wear skirts that reach their knees or slightly above their knees.  And when they sit, the skirt hikes up a bit. Please, use your bags to cover your assets.  Unless you don’t mind showing the color and design of your undies to the person in front of you, then stay comfy with how you sit. It’s your call. Naku Lord! Wag Nyo naman na ipahintulot na mangyari ulet sa’ken yun… medyo… masakit sa mata, sa ulo at sa sikmura. hehehe

SHOEmiliation

I decided to come to the office later than usual that fateful Thursday because I stayed in the office verrrrryyyy late the previous night. And what better way to lift my down-in-the-dumps feeling? A good outfit matched with a pair of fab slip-ons. Sadly, it lifted me up for less than two hours because as I alighted the service and was about to cross the street, the most embarassing thing happened. Nauna ako sa sandals ko by 2 steps! Thinking that maybe it just slipped off my foot, well because it’s a slip-on anyway, I came back for it… quite bravely but deep inside very embarassed!

the once-fab slip-ons

I felt like a sweaty pig in my fab outfit! As in I don’t know how I can possibly get away with this kind of shoe dilemma with some dignity left. While figuring a way out of my shoe shame, I called a dear friend, who unfortunately took a different route and was still more than half an hour away from Makati but very much willing to make a detour so she can fetch me. And as I was talking to her, I saw a glimmer of hope in my oh-so-hopeless situation.

There were two men fixing the signage of the restaurant where I was shamelessly stuck for the last ten minutes (which actually felt like an eternity of damnation).  I bravely approached one manong and asked if I can borrow his slippers and showed them my used-to-be fab slip-ons.  There was a parking attendant (now there were three of them who witnessed my shoe-miliation.. sorry! can’t help the pun) who offered to bring my shoes to the repair shop across the street.  With all the dignity I could muster, I told him that it’s ok and that I just need to borrow the slippers for a while. I wasn’t prepared for manong’s slippers. It was like wearing havaianas! hahaha

So I finally got to cross the street and went to the shoe repair shop. And I don’t know if I’m such a bad person to deserve this kind of rotten luck because the person doing the shoe repair is not yet there! I’m like huwwatttt???? It’s 10AM, the malls are even open by this time already! And good old repairman is not yet here???? Why of all days???

But I told myself to be calm and collected because there is 711 right beside the shop. When I saw the slippers on sale,I almost want to cry! The only colors of the slippers there? Ridiculuosly-outrageous-pink and screaming-out-loud-orange! Gusto ko na ngang lumuhod, tumingala sa langit at sabihin, “Lord, ano bang ginawa ko at parang lahat na yata ng kamalasan binigay mo sa’kin?” Yeah, I’m the drama queen but I didn’t do that. I thought that orange would at least compliment the color of my blouse so I (grudgingly) bought it and (cringingly) wore it.

But before I left the store, I bought the kind manong a hotdog sandwich and went back to the restaurant to return his slippers. He doesn’t want to get the sandwich and said that it’s ok but I said that it’s my way of thanking him. So he finally got it.

And you think the embarassment is over? Of course not! I still have to go to my office in my I-can-see-you-from-10-miles-orange-slippers. Good thing, though that it’s way past rush hour so there were few people who saw me and my hideous slippers. As soon as I got to my cubicle, I’ve never been so happy (and relieved) to see my old black heels. I hastily changed into them and thinking of throwing the slippers but I didn’t. It’s there under my cubicle, staring at me and reminding me of life’s rotten SHOEprises and kind people who will take a detour to fetch you and let you borrow their slippers when you need them.

Adobong Tatay

Fathersdaycardfront1_2

I know how to cook, yes. But I did not adobo’ed my Tatay. I thought it a fitting title because just like adobo, he’s got a lot of spices but definitely nice.  Plus he cooks the most insanely delicious adobo you can ever taste; well I’m a bit biased, of course.  But my friends and relatives love his adobo (and chicken curry, barbeque, among others) just as much as I do.

He’s the sweetest dad ever because he wakes up early to cook breakfast (lunch and dinner) for us and when it’s a bit cold in the morning, he would even heat water for our bath. Even if I tell him, I can do it, he would still beat me to it. Though ngayon na lang ganyan ang Tatay ko.

The three of us had our share of spanking especially my sister and me because we would fight over the littlest things.  I can still remember this one instance when my sister and I were having our usual petty fights  and we called each other tanga.  He detests this word because as he puts it, “Walang gamot sa katangahan… buti pa ang kabobohan meron.”  And these words stuck to me like glue.

When we were kids, he would force us to take our afternoon naps kahit buhay na buhay pa ang dugo namin.  But at 4:00PM, he would wake us up because it’s play time!  But mind you, we can only play in front of our house.  And if he’s in the mood, he will let us play at our friend’s house which is just across ours.  By 6:00PM, we should be home already. Otherwise, we will hear his most distinctive sitsit and not only us who will be in panic mode but our friends as well.  Kulang na lang itapon nila kami palabas ng bahay nila dahil sa takot sa Tatay namin. We grew up like this that’s why I am amazed that nowadays, kids are still out on the streets at 10:00PM.  I mean, aren’t their parents looking for them?

06152008453My Tatay is not perfect; he has his flaws and bad decisions in the past (even at present). But he’s what we’ve got and we love him.  Imperfection and all.  The same way that he loves us, imperfection and all.

Happy Father’s Day, Tatay!… and to all the dads out there, too!

Sex is Definitely in the City

I

’m taking a break from recapping my adventures in Singapore and Bangkok to give way to my excitement with the movie version of Sex and the City.  It took all of my will power not to watch the movie last Wednesday because one friend asked that we watch it Friday instead. So the anticipation was quite building up already.

I’ve been waiting for the longest for the movie (pretty much similar to waiting for my own Mr. Big…) to come out and it was definitely worth the wait (I wish I could say the same when he finally comes along).

And then came Friday! The air was really charged with excitement and anticipation as drones of women flock the movie house.  Well, there are a few men who were probably left with no choice but to accompany their girlfriends (or just won’t admit that they are interested to watch it too).

It was a two and half hour movie but it never dragged for one bit.  We were laughing and crying (yeah I cried… so? hehehe) and applauding.  The audience was really into the movie.  And it’s so much fun.  Now it’s confirmed that Sex and the City does have a cult following; not just in America but all over. Considering that it’s being criticized in some reviews and websites as falling short on expectations, the fans doesn’t seem to notice.

Inasmuch as I love the movie and the series as well, I’m just not too keen on the idea that sex is just like taking a breath of fresh air… that it’s just like an itch that needs to be scratched.  This saddens me.  I am not a prude but I am a romantic too (in spite me being a self-proclaimed cynic when it comes to that elusive love thing).  I like to think that people do it out of love and not out of sheer necessity.

Their take on issues like men’s (sometimes pathetic) thinking; the dating game; all sorts of relationship; and all the hard truths are good and real stuff.  And that’s what’s really happening out there.  And if there’s one thing that I like to believe, is that, all of us are wishing for our own happy-ever-after, consciously or not. It may be a life where a prince will sweep us off our feet… or simply a life where we are alone but hopefully not lonely.

Side Note:  It’s only me and my two friends who watched the movie.  SATC has an ongoing promo where you will fill out a raffle coupon and drop it in the SATC dropbox (of course!).  I filled out mine already so I just dropped it while my two friends were filling out theirs.  One friend was so serious in writing her details and unceremoniously dropped it in the nearest dropbox.  The Customer Feedback dropbox! There goes your chance girl! hehehehe…

Singapore Revisited - Part 2

Categories: Places I've Been.

Now on to the second part of my vacation.  Hay!!! So many places…. so little time!

Img_0120aSENTOSA: It was my second time in Sentosa, but it was only then   that I got to see the beach side.  We went to Siloso Beach and Palawan Beach.  I must admit it’s an ideal place for picture-taking buImg_0080at not for bathing. Believe me.  The surroundings are picturesque but the waters? It’s stagnant and murky to a certain degree. Well, if you’re too sabik sa beach, then maybe you’ll (risk a) swim here but if you’re from a country where beautiful beaches (both explored and unexplored) are abundant, you’ll be content with having your pictorial here.  Ummmm… you’re probably thinking the water farther from the shore is clearer than the water near the shoreline… it’s not. It’s the same. Across the whole man-made beach.

Img_0846 THE SINGAPORE FLYER: At S$29.50, you’ll ride the largest  observation wheel (yeah, it bested the London Eye) for half an hour and see the Lion City 165m from above. There is another ticket option that you can try; the Express Boarding, which costs S$69.  And I thImg_729ought that this one will rotate much faster and spin you like crazy (nyahahaha) but no. This ticket includes signature cocktails for you to sip while enjoying the ride. Plus, a wrapped souvenir cocktail glass when you alight from the capsule.  Well if you’re in the mood for indulging yourself, why not? But we’re not. So we simply took the basic flight.  No cocktails on board but definitely just as fun!

Img_0740_2JURONG BIRD PARK:  This place hasImg_626_1 God’s hand written all over it.  So many beautiful creatures in one place. Amazing. But my favorite? The two smooching penguins.  They look so in love and they’re so uninhibited. Not a care in the world… so shameless…  and sooo cute!  And all the while, I thought, only the locals there are into public display of affection a.k.a PDA… pati penguins ganun din… hawa-hawa na itoh! hehehe

Img_0786MERLION PARK:  Finally up close and personal with the famous Merlion.  It’s right across the Fullerton Hotel (a.k.a FulTERton according to my friend… ok! I’m not going to drop names here… hahaha), which looks imposing and magnificent in its classic white façade.  Img_0789a_3

Esplanadenight_051008 ESPLANADE: We saw the Esplanade and had our pictures taken under the scorching afternoon heat but it is lovely nevertheless.  But wait until it’s nighttime and it becomes more splendid. Thanks muy amigo!

Dsc00142_9BOAT QUAY:  We were all planning to meet at the Jumbo Seafood Restaurant but all 12 stomachs cannot hold the 45-minute wait so we decided to walk towards Boat Quay instead. We finally settled at the  Seafood at the Pier. Food here was good.  Our medium-sized chili crab turned out to be quite huge. The cereal prawns, well, it was not as sumptuous as the one served at the Jumbo Resto because the cereals are not as crunchy as I hoped it would be. The stingray was surprisingly delicious.

HootersCLARK QUAY:  So after dinner, we headed back to Clark Quay and continued our get-together at Hooters.  Snippets of conversations on various topics are all over the table. It was hard to keep up but it doesn’t matter.  It just feels good to be in the company of old familiar faces. While the boys enjoyed the physical surrounding, the girls enjoyed our glass of Hooty-Rita. Cheers!!!

BUGIS:  I can’t get enough of this place.  No matter how many times I go to Singapore, I’ll always find time to go here.  The best street market ever! Better than their Chinatown, huh! You get the best deals here. My favorite department store here? OG. They have the best deals in shoes, bags and almost everything! It’s like they’re always on sale.  I got my branded bag here for S$39… the original price? S$109! Pretty much a steal!

And of course, my favorite street ice cream is everywhere here. Hay!!! Peppermint Choco Chips, Choco Chip Mint… anyway they call it is just as sweet! Yummy!

If you get tired of OG, just right across the street are two more stores, BHG and Bugis Junction Mall.  A lot of goodies here too but OG’s price is still the price to beat.

Img_0602aORCHARD: We went to The Sanctuary by IndoChine. Cool place. Good cocktails. Good food. Acoustic music.  This alfresco bar is right below the Wisma Atria in Orchard.  You’ll pass it by as you’re walking down Orchard.  They’ve got plush settees so chatting with friends is pretty much comfortable… so comfy that couples get a little too comfy… No elaboration required.

MARINA BAY:  Funny that we didn’t lose our waImg_750_1y on our first time in Singapore but got lost on our second and ended up traversing the length of Marina Bay, thinking it is the same as the  Marina. Well hello! Good thing it wasn’t just the three of us who seemed pretty much out of sync with the place. There were two other girls, hopelessly lost, with a map in hand.  Grabeh! Kahit taxi wala! We tried our best to ignore the stares thrown at us by the construction workers there and bravely headed back towards the MRT station.  So to those who haven’t reached Marina Bay, this is all you’ll see here.

After waiting for ages, our vacation was finally pushed through.  We booked our flight  waaayyyyy ahead of time  so you can just imagine the anticipation.  We were antsy by March… too restless by April… and suddenly surprised that the date came too fast and we’re finally leaving!

Singapore never fails to excite me.  It’s my second visit and there are still a lot of places that I want to go to. What I love about the Lion City? Traffic isn’t as bad as it is Manila; cleaner breath of fresh air (though there’s some kind of smell every so often that’s not all too fresh!); nearby malls on every MRT station; and the word "SALE" on almost every store window! Our feet are just too tired to wander but our eyes can’t help from straying and our necks from craning towards the goodies that are on display.  It was just the thought of paying for every kilo of excess baggage that kept us from buying the shoes, bags and clothes that caught our fancy. And it’s got to be one of the hardest things to do. Really.

large smile

Img_0602_8But what makes Singapore even more special? The friends we have there. Sobra. Considering they have their work and busy schedules, they found the time to meet and treat us to lunch, dinner or night out and 33121014438068l1_1accompany us to places we like to go. They even opened their homes to us.  We are so overwhelmed with their generosity that it’s almost shameful to be on the receiving end of it. We know how costly it is to live there and for them to be that generous is just so heartwarming.

Dsc00142_8 Ummm… did I mention that I was not able to work with some of them during their stint with Allied? Some of them have left the bank even before I had the chance to work with them or were merely contact persons. But just the same, we met and talked like old friends.  And that makes it all the more special.  You got to give it to the Filipino culture.  Iba talaga when Filipinos are abroad. We are truly overwhelmed with gratitude.

Missing Out and Catching Up

A lot of things happened lately, both at work and in my ever mundane personal life.Dsc07100a_1
Work was at its highest level of busyness and I don’t want to elaborate lest I’d feel like I’m doing a status report. And being in this other side of Makati is not helping me at all. I’m soooooooo far from my friends that I rarely get to see them.  It is on special occasions that I make it a point to see them. The last time I saw all of my ex-officemates-barkada was during their Christmas party.

Img_040And just last Friday, we had an all-girls-night-out and whatta night that was! It was a dear friend’s bridal shower and compared to the other bridal showers we have attended, this is oh so remarkably different.  And I refuse to share it here… Hahaha…

And after my on-and-off relationship with my sport, badminton, it’s playing time again.  Finally! I still have my post-holiday-pounds-and-a-whole-lotta-extra-pounds that I gotta rid off fast because I’m attending a wedding in less than a month and I don’t want to look like a puto bumbong in my lavender dress.

Hayyyyy!!!!  And thinking of Conti’s Mango Bravo Mangobravo_1

right now, is no help at all! I brought home that cake for my father’s birthday and it took only 2 days to finish it all off.  A little background, there’s only 4 of us at home and my brother doesn’t like sweets that much so that pretty much leaves me and my parents to devour whatever sweets we have in the fridge. And we did set a record! It usually takes around 5 days for us to finish a whole cake but this one is sooooooooo mouth-watering that you really GOTTA EAT it! And you really can’t resist the urge your craving for it… you feel helpless… you just have to give in to the sweet temptation.  That’s how good Conti’s Mango Bravo is. Simply delish!

Glorietta Blast in Retrospect

Posted on November 19, 2007 by wenggayness.
Categories: Random Blurbs.

(this is how busy I have been! … imagine writing about it almost a month after)

I am not a big fan of “change”.  I like nice and convenient things to be as they are.  So when the announcement came that our company will be relocating, it felt like my world is crushing down on me. I was in silent hysterics just thinking about NO Landmark, NO Glorietta and NO Greenbelt during lunch time.  And the nearest thing to a Landmark-like experience is the Cash and Carry Express Supermarket near our place or the Mini-Stop Convenience Store across the street. Now this calls for real hysteric and panic! Seriously!

All my (working) life, I was near these places where I can easily meet my friends and ex-officemates or just spend an hour (and a half) by myself just wandering and window-shopping to clear my head; or simply browsing through books and fitting clothes I would not buy. And now I got thrown into the deep recesses of Makati where it will take me almost half my lunch time to get to the places I love going to. You can just imagine the sadness, near-depression feeling I have when we moved.

And then, the infamous Glorietta blast happened.  Now this had me thinking.  And this had me thanking the Great Being up there watching over an undeserving being like me.  Had our company not relocated, I am sure I would have been part of the statistics; my name would have been in the papers (boy, that would be a morbid first!).

Well, as they say in the vernacular, pana-panahon lang yan.  But nevertheless, I’ve never felt so blessed and grateful that my family and friends were saved.  Not that the ones who died or got hurt were not blessed, I always believe there is a grand plan and reason why people live and die.  It’s not for us to neither question nor blame. As the song goes, you just gotta have faith.
